String Replacement & Complete Restringing

Restore playability and improve tone quality with strings by Glenmore Piano Service. Choose from copper, brass and stainless steel alloys from top manufacturers. Each string is hand-fabricated, inspected and installed by a master technician. The result is a quality of tone and level of durability that often exceeds the original manufacturer’s specifications. We provide string replacement and complete restringing for all brands of upright and grand piano.

Rescaling

When replacing strings it is possible to improve a piano’s tonal characteristics – this is known as rescaling. In the past, scale designs were developed by trial-and-error, which was expensive and time consuming. Scale designs from top manufacturers were copied, altered, and copied again. Today, it is possible to create an individual scale design for your piano. Through careful adjustment of string diameters and windings, and by combining different wire materials, we can reduce interference between strings, improving clarity, optimize the balance between bass, midrange and treble, and increase intensity and sustain.

Replacement Process

Bass Strings (monochords & bichords) – String is removed and returned to our shop for duplication. Depending on the type of string and the shop backlog, duplication can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The newly fabricated string is reinstalled and brought up to pitch. Treble Strings (Trichords) – The replacement string is made on-site, installed and brought up to pitch.

Break-in/Run-in Period

As they are subjected to hammer forces for the first time, new strings will naturally stretch, causing them to fall slightly flat. It can take more than one tuning for new strings to stabilize at reference pitch.

Cost & Methods of Payment

Individual string replacement ranges from $60-80 and up, in addition to the basic service call. The cost depends on the material used and the actual work required for your piano. Please contact us for an estimate. Debit cards, credit cards and cash are accepted. Commercial and institutional clients can apply to pay by invoice.
